DENNEHY DOMINATION IN BEIJING, BUT THE CLEAN SWEEP SLIPS

Sahra Dennehy came to the closing day of Beijing with three finals in front of her and a sweep within reach. She left with two gold medals, just not the clean sweep.

The Australian owned Championship Sunday at the Capital Securities Beijing Open 2026. She defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chao Yi Wang in the Women’s Singles final. She overcame her again in the Women’s Doubles. Two finals, two wins over the same rival, two golds before the afternoon was out. The triple crown was still on.

Then it got away, in the very last match of the day.

Double down on titles

Dennehy’s account opened in the early afternoon with the Women’s Singles. Dennehy was clean and quick, taking the first game 11-7 and pulling away in the second 11-3 for the title in straight games.

Two hours later they were back out for the Women’s Doubles. Dennehy and home favorite Yufei Long held off the top seeds Aiko Yoshitomi and Wang 11-7, 11-9, the second game the only one that caused a headache. That was gold number two. Three in a row? That will have to wait for another stop.

Pipped at the post

The Mixed Doubles final closed out Championship Court. Win it, and Dennehy sweeps all three of her events. She and Joseph Wild had the shot. But the top seeds Wang and Len Yang took it off them 11-7, 11-6. The fast hands of Len and the ability for Wang to hustle out of anyway situation had the Aussie duo on the back foot from the get go. Unable to find their footing, the Mixed Doubles went the way of the top seeds an Dennehy was pipped at the post for the Triple Crown.

Wang and Dennehy met in all three finals, the top seed against the second seed every time, and Dennehy took two of the three titles. From the Hangzhou final last December to three more in a single afternoon here, these two keep meeting with everything on the line. The rivalry is clearly growing.

Wong gets his second

Hong Kong’s Hong Kit Wong produced one of the displays of the day in the Men’s Singles final. He defeated Asia debutant, top seed and World No.10 Zane Ford 11-5, 11-8 for his second PPA Tour Asia singles gold, his first having come at the Hong Kong Open 2025.

It came on a long day on Championship Court, and Wong still had the legs to play his cat and mouse style and see off the in-form American in straight games.

Truong and Do finish strong

Hien Truong and Quan Do took the Men’s Doubles title, beating Kenta Miyoshi and Robert Stirling 11-9, 11-7. Miyoshi and Stirling had been the surprise of the semifinals, knocking out the top seeds Eunggwon Kim and Wong after dropping the opening game. In the final, the #2 seeds were the steadier pair and closed out both games by two. It was a second title made in China, having got their first gold together in Hangzhou last year.

The next stop for PPA Tour Asia is the Sansan Tokyo Open set to go down July 1-4.
