TITLES SHARED IN KUALA LUMPUR AS TRUONG LEADS THE RACE TO COMPLETE THE DRAGON
| May 17, 2026
There was potential for triple and double crowns, but as the action closed out at the Panas Kuala Lumpur Open 2026, the titles were shared around. No player left the court with more than one gold on Championship Sunday.
Hien Truong finally has his Men’s Singles gold. The #1 seed and world No.18 ended the dream run of qualifier Nasa Hatakeyama 11-2, 11-3 in a dominant final that was never in doubt. Truong didn’t drop a single game all tournament.
Hatakeyama’s run from qualifying through #2 seed Hong Kit Wong and #7 seed Zane Navratil was the story of the week, but Truong was a hurdle too high. The unorthodox lefty from Japan tried to find creative angles and make moves with his wrist, but Truong was too steady and found all the lines.
The win proves Truong’s all-round credentials. He now has a Men’s Singles gold to go alongside his Men’s Doubles title won at the Vibrant Linping Hangzhou Open at the end of 2025. More importantly, it moves him closer to completing the dragon. Truong is the first player to claim two pieces of the three-medal set. His silver at the MB Hanoi Cup 2026 gave him the body. Today’s gold gives him the tail. The head awaits at the Hong Kong Slam.
Wang breaks through in singles
The triple crown bid fell short, but Chao Yi Wang still walked away with a title. The #1 seed and world No.7 beat qualifier Pei-Chuan Kao 11-5, 11-6 in the Women’s Singles final to claim her first gold in the discipline after a silver in Hangzhou last year.
The fairytale finish was out of reach for Kao, who came all the way from qualifying. Wang was too clinical when it mattered. The gold-less streak in singles is over.
Wei and Long dominate Women’s Doubles
It was in the Women’s Doubles that Wan’s triple crown dream ended. Yufei Long and Ting Chieh Wei absolutely dominated #1 seeds Alix Truong and Chao Yi Wang 11-5, 11-2, leading from the start all the way to the podium. Accuracy, consistency and composure was the story of the victory. It’s the second gold for Wei and Long as a pair after the Sansan Fukuoka Open 2025, and Wei’s fourth Women’s Doubles gold overall on PPA Tour Asia.
Johns and Yang cruise in Men’s Doubles
Collin Johns and Len Yang made light work of the Men’s Doubles final. The duo have been getting plenty of experience together in the United States and it showed, as they took down the first-time pairing of Tama Shimabukuro and Armaan Bhatia 11-3, 11-6. It was Yang’s second Men’s Doubles gold in Asia after the Hong Kong Open 2025 and Johns’ first.
Shimabukuro and Truong take Mixed Doubles
Tama Shimabukuro and Alix Truong defeated Len Yang and Chao Yi Wang 11-5, 3-11, 11-2 in the closest final of the day. Wang had a shot at a second gold after winning Women’s Singles earlier in the afternoon, but the #1 seeds were too strong in the decider. The win ensured the medals were shared around, with no player taking home a double gold.

It’s Truong’s third Mixed Doubles gold on PPA Tour Asia, extending her lead at the top of the discipline’s medal ladder. For Shimabukuro, it’s his first gold in Asia after losing two bronze medal playoffs.
The next stop on PPA Tour Asia is the Macao Open, set to go down May 28-31 at the Venetian Macao in Macao, China.
